Sustainable healthcare packaging

Plastic free, sustainable medical device packaging at RDi

At RDi, we strive to enable the healthcare arena to achieve their aspirations and objectives whilst remaining innovative and compliant. With this comes our range of plastic-free products and kits which pioneer sustainable healthcare packaging.

We deliver a range of plastic-free medical device collection kits as well as packaging solutions. They all achieve up to a 95% reduction in plastic compared to competitor products available on the market.

The RDi team, which is made up of data technologists and life sciences professionals, have prioritised maintaining this ambitious sustainable and plastic reduced approach to the products currently available as well as in our exciting development pipeline.

Sustainable healthcare packaging, kitting and collection devices

We enable a range of diagnostic service providers, healthcare and clinical organisations to become more sustainable through their choice of kits, consumables and medical products. Independent research into today’s current market offerings and RDi’s products have proven our capability to minimise the volume of required plastic materials whilst manufacturing our products.

Focused on minimising the plastic usage across a variety of different sample collection devices and UN3373 packaging requirements, our R&D team assess the size and weight of our solutions and ensures that we can reach an optimum reduction in plastic use. Examples include:

Sustainable healthcare packaging delivered by RDi, including the safeTpouch with up to 73% reduction in plastic

The safeTpouch was created as a response to the market gaps experienced by our customers who were looking to identify a UN3373 compliant secondary packaging solution which reduces the plastic whilst still providing a complaint 95kpa leakproof pouch.

The safeTpouch offers a more sustainable UN3373 secondary packaging solution, using 73% less plastic than competitor products. The overall plastic footprint for packing and shipping sample tubes is dramatically reduced with this 95kPa specimen transport bag.

This solution has proved effective in reducing plastic in home testing. During December 2021 of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was a crucial period of time where home testing reached its peak, there were over 1,794,634 PCR tests performed.

If the safeTpouch has been deployed instead during this time, then the amount of plastic used in the near 1.7 million PCR tests would be equivalent to that used in only 484,500 conventionally packaged tests (based on our average plastic reduction achieved of 73%).

The safe2Pcanter is an innovative, flat-packed medical device to facilitate successful patient experiences at home urine sample collection. The R&D process of this kitting solution enabled RDi to account for market demands for an alternative to bulky single use devices such as cups made form 100% plastic materials.

The safe2Pcanter is a UKCA, CE and FDA registered solution which boasts only 10% plastic materials. The urine collection device is 100% recyclable if you remove the plastic inner, which is 1gm LDPE, compared to competitor counterparts which are 13gm LDPE – 19gm LDPE.
